In excess of two dozen Olympic champions, trainers and additional global sports figures have put their names to a statement calling for a halt to the execution of a champion boxer and trainer, who is on death row in Iran.

Increasing International Outrage

Amid rising global condemnation over the country's expanding employment of the death penalty as a tool of repression, the strongly worded appeal denounces the authorities's verdict to confirm the execution order of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

The boxer, 30, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and indicted of backing an resistance movement. He has spent 60 months in prison, where he has been tortured and confined in isolation.

“Athletics is intended to encourage hope, solidarity, and bravery,” the signatories wrote. “The capital punishment of a winner for his opinions is a direct assault on these principles and a caution to every athlete who attempts to speak out.

Pattern of Killing Competitors

The appeal noted that Vafaei Sani’s circumstances was not an isolated one and underscored the nation's history of sentencing to death sports champions for their convictions, for example Habib Khabiri, leader of the national football team, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the female volleyball side. In the year 2020, an athlete, a young national sports titleholder, was also executed.

Additional supporters to the statement include a sailing champion, who captained the first women's squad in a global yacht race and was the pioneering lady to earn a prestigious sailing award; the previous captain of the soccer side a sports advocate; and a sports figure, who was in the country's selection for the 1978 World Cup.

Apprehension and Unjust Proceedings

The athlete was arrested in March 2020. The allegations against him entailed “promoting decay on Earth through arson and damage of government belongings”. His verdict has been annulled multiple times but on October 4 it was confirmed on the third occasion. His trial was condemned as “highly unjust” by advocates and groups.

Appeal to UN

The appeal to halt Vafaei Sani’s death sentence is subsequent to a previous letter to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by more than 100 rights specialists and organizations, demanding intervention to avert the sports figure's death.

Capital Punishment Escalation

According to reports, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has reached horrific proportions”.
